01 / Entries, Revisit and photos

Where are my feelings and journal stored?

Entries, drafts, photos, pages, reading progress and settings are stored in the app's private storage on this device by default. Cross-device sync is off by default. You can turn it on in “You → iCloud sync” to sync personal content to the private iCloud space of the same Apple Account. App lock, reminders and reading progress remain separate on each device. With “Optimize photo storage” enabled, some synced photos keep only previews locally, while their full saved versions download from iCloud as needed. The developer has no server that receives your journal.

iOS device backups and cloud backups you choose may keep copies. Export a complete backup before changing devices or deleting the app.

Can I record a day without writing anything?

Yes. Choose one or two of the nine feelings to save the moment. Text, a title and photos are optional. Feeling-only entries show your selected feelings and the time; the app does not write a journal entry for you. If a regular entry is unfinished, go back and choose “Save draft and go back” to continue later.

How do I find old entries or add a past day?

Days arranges entries continuously by date. Scroll up and down, and switch between Moments and Feelings for fuller entries or a compact mood view. Select the month or calendar to jump to a date.

“Leave a moment” records today. To add a past day, find its date and use “Record this day”. Open an existing entry to read it in full, edit it or add a later addendum.

How can I turn recent entries into a page?

Open Revisit. The app prepares a suggested page on your device using entries in the selected range. It starts with “Last 7 days”; you can also choose “Previous week” or “This month”. If you like it as it is, select “Keep this page” to save.

Select “Adjust this page” to replace, add or remove moments, choose “Everyday scrapbook”, “A little whitespace” or “A letter to myself”, and optionally add “Your own words”. The three suggested entries are not a limit: further moments continue in groups of three per page, with your note on the last page. Photos, text and feeling-only entries can all be included.

Can I edit a saved memory? Do I have to read every entry?

You can keep editing a saved memory. Changes to its selections, style and note are kept as a separate draft; the work updates only when you explicitly select “Save changes”. Your note does not overwrite the original entries. Opening a suggestion without adjusting it does not automatically create a draft.

“Revisit moments” is a separate entry point. You can simply read, without writing a reflection or making a page. Saving a page does not complete reading for you. Long content may export across several images; review all images in the preview before saving or sharing.

Why did importing or saving a photo fail?

The app only reads photos you select in the system photo picker. Each photo has a 40 MiB limit. If importing fails, select it again, try a smaller image and check your device's free space.

Saving a page to Photos requires permission to add photos. If you denied it, find Daymelle in iPhone Settings and check its photo permissions. Importing selected photos and adding images to Photos are separate operations.

Are photos compressed? How can I reduce their storage use?

New still photos are resized and compressed when needed. Identical saved content can share a file when imported again; existing photos are not automatically recompressed. Daymelle keeps a version suitable for your journal, so keep original photos separately if you want to preserve them long term.

In You → Photo storage, check storage use and choose “Free up space” to remove unused photo files. Photos still used by entries or drafts are kept.

After enabling iCloud sync, you can also select “Optimize photo storage”. This is off by default. When enabled, the app can remove local full versions of photos confirmed as synced, keeping smaller previews. Viewing full photos, cropping, exporting or backing up may require an internet download. Before turning off optimization or sync, the app retrieves the full saved versions. If downloading fails, it shows an error and does not treat the setting as successfully turned off.

02 / Sync, backups and moving devices

How is iCloud sync different from a file backup?

Use the same Apple Account on both iPhones and turn on You → iCloud sync. The app automatically tries to sync entries, photos, drafts and pages; offline changes are saved locally first. Check the sync status and last successful time shown in the app. It explains when you are signed out, offline or out of space.

Normal deletions also sync, so sync cannot replace an independent backup. Turning sync off keeps local and iCloud copies; turning it on again merges content. A file backup is a complete copy from a particular moment that you can restore later. If the same content is changed on different devices at once, retained conflicting versions are available on the sync page.

How do I move to a new phone using a backup file?
  1. Open You in the app, then go to Backup & recovery → Export complete backup.
  2. Save the complete .daymelle backup to a location you choose in Files, such as iCloud Drive.
  3. Install Daymelle on the new device, turn off iCloud sync first, then go to Backup & recovery → Restore backup and select the file.
  4. Check the preview, then confirm replacement. Restoring a file replaces the current journal; it does not merge the contents of two devices. Enabling iCloud sync afterwards will merge cloud content.

A complete backup contains the app's saved photos, drafts, pages and items not yet cleared from Recently Deleted. The new .daymelle archive no longer has the old JSON format's 150 MiB whole-journal limit, but enough space is still needed locally and at the destination. Older JSON / V13 backups can still be imported. Photos stored only in iCloud must be downloaded before backup. If they cannot be retrieved, the app reports a failure rather than exporting an incomplete backup as a complete one.

Backup files have no additional password encryption. Store them carefully and do not send them to others casually.

Do automatic backups run continuously in the background?

No. Choosing a backup folder enables automatic backups and attempts an immediate backup. Afterwards, the app checks for content changes when it enters the foreground and is unlocked. These automatic checks trigger backups at most once every 24 hours. You can also select “Back up now” manually.

Automatic backup attempts to keep only the latest 7 automatic backups created by Daymelle in the selected folder, counting both old JSON and new .daymelle files. If it is a cloud folder, the system or cloud service handles uploading. A saved file does not guarantee a completed cloud upload. You can turn off automatic backups on this page at any time.

Can the developer recover my entries if I have no backup?

The developer has no copy of your journal and cannot retrieve it from a server. First check Privacy & data → Recently Deleted and backups in Files. If you previously enabled iCloud, the same Apple Account's private cloud may still contain synced content, but synced deletions are not retained forever. If you have an iPhone system backup, you can also consult Apple's device restoration instructions.

If the app says it cannot open your data, keep the app and existing files, and describe the problem to the developer. Do not delete the app just to troubleshoot.

03 / Privacy and deletion

How do I lock my journal?

Go to You → Privacy & data → App lock, enable App lock and choose a locking interval. iOS authenticates using Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode. Daymelle does not receive your facial data, fingerprint or device passcode.

App lock protects access to the app. It does not add a password to exported backup files.

Can I recover deleted content?

Entries, pages and photos removed when edits are saved go to Recently Deleted for 30 days. After they expire, the app cleans them up the next time it is foregrounded and unlocked. You can also permanently delete them earlier.

When sync is enabled, deletion and restoration states also sync to other devices. Photos still used by other entries or drafts are kept. You can edit or delete an individual later addendum. Deleting its text and editing draft bypasses Recently Deleted, keeps the original entry, and asks for confirmation first. Photos removed from addenda still follow the 30-day Recently Deleted rule. If the original addendum has been deleted, you can save its photos separately, but cannot restore them to that addendum. Separately saved small experiments, insights or other copies may need separate deletion. External backups, Photos images and shared content do not disappear when you delete something inside the app.

How do I clear all journal data?

Turn off iCloud sync first, then go to You → Privacy & data → Clear all journal data and confirm as prompted. This clears the current journal, photos, drafts, pages, review content, Recently Deleted and related data on this iPhone, and removes local journal recovery copies.

Clearing this device does not clear existing iCloud copies. Enabling sync again merges cloud content. Normal individual deletions and permanent deletions sync while sync is enabled. Manage other copies separately in Files, cloud folders, Photos and system backups. App lock and backup folder settings are independent device settings. Clearing the journal does not turn off automatic backups; you can disable them first in Backup & recovery.

Why have I not received a system reminder notification?

Current reminders appear only inside the app, for continuing drafts, weekly revisits and small experiments. They do not send system reminder notifications. View reminders in You and select the main action to continue. Date and dismissal options are in the corresponding menus.

Does the app show ads, track me or upload my journal?

The current version has no advertising, analytics or tracking SDKs. Search, mood revisits, and smart page selection and layout run on your device, without sending entries to third-party AI. Personal content syncs through the app to Apple's private database only after you enable iCloud sync. Exports, shares, cloud files and iOS system backups are separate copies. The developer does not receive your journal. See the privacy policy.
